Additional Local Veterans Exemption Document
The Town of Orange, through the Board of Selectmen, amended an ordinance, on February 13, 2019, that increases the qualifying income for the 20,000 additional veteran’s assessment exemption.
The Town of Orange holds the distinction of being the first town in the State of Connecticut to pass such an ordinance in 2004. The amended ordinance redefines eligibility as:
Any veteran entitled to an exemption from property tax in accordance with Subdivision (19) of Section 12-81 of the Connecticut Statutes shall be entitled to an additional exemption applicable to the assessed value of property in an amount that shall not exceed the sum of $20,000, provided such veteran's qualifying income does not exceed the greater of $75,000.
Any veteran's surviving spouse entitled to an exemption from property tax in accordance with Subdivision 22 of Section 12-81 of the Connecticut General Statutes shall be entitled to an additional exemption applicable to the assessed value of property, which exemption shall not exceed the sum of $20,000, provided such surviving spouse's qualifying income does not exceed the greater of $75,000.
Income includes wages, tips, salaries, interest, dividends, (either taxable or exempt), and gross social security. If you filed or intend to file a 2024 federal income tax return, please submit a copy. If you received social security benefits over the 2024 calendar year, you must submit a copy of your SSA 1099 form. If any applicant is certified as 100 % disabled by the Veterans Administration, social security is excluded for the income reporting requirements. Income requirements are set by section 12-81l of the Connecticut General Statutes.
