Effective 1/1/2011 all electronic items, known as e-waste, will not be allowed in the hopper at the Orange Transfer Station according to a new state statute.
Items that are not allowed are the following:

  • CRTs
  • LCDs
  • TVs
  • MP3s
  • Hard drives
  • Laptops
  • Computers
  • Cell phones
  • iPads
  • iPhones
  • All electronic wiring, including cables that connect to your device
  • Other electronic devices not mentioned

A sign is displayed to direct you to a trailer for disposal.
Some of these items may contain mercury, which is toxic.

  • Effective October 1, 2009, the Bottle Bill was expanded to include noncarbonated water up to 3 liters in size with a 5-cent redemption value. Redeem at the local store that sold the container.
  • Blue bins can be purchased from the Public Works Department at Town Hall, telephone (203) 891-4712. See Stasia Packard for recycling bins.
  • The following items can be put in your blue bin:
    • Newspapers, junk mail, catalogs, and magazines. Place newspapers on top of blue bin either tied with string or enclosed in a brown paper bag. Include all sections of the paper plus any coupon inserts and flyers that arrive inside.
    • Plastic containers, such as beverage, food, or detergent containers. Empty and rinse, leave labels on, discard caps. Effective July 1, 2011, all plastics #1-7 will be allowed to be co-mingled with paper and cardboard at the curbside in the blue bins.
    • Glass containers - unbroken food or beverage bottles and jars. They can be clear, brown, or green colored glass. Empty and rinse, leave labels on, discard caps.
    • Aluminum or tin beverage and food cans, aluminum trays and foil.
    • Cardboard must be flattened and folded into pieces no larger than 3 ft. x 3 ft. Clean cardboard, cracker boxes, pasta boxes, shoe boxes, paper egg boxes, and similar materials will be allowed with no bundling required. See the CRRA Recycling link below for more information on what is allowed and not allowed. (No pizza boxes are accepted, due to food contamination.)
  • These items can also be dropped off at the appropriate bin at the transfer station. Bulk mail dropped off there does not need to be in a separate bag. Corrugated cardboard must be flattened and discarded in the corrugated cardboard container located near the hopper.

REMEMBER IT IS EVERYONE'S JOB TO RECYCLE
