ODAAC meeting

October 15, 2007

Meeting was called to order by Noreen at 7:35 pm

Anyone interested in serving as Recording Secretary, see Joan.

 

Correspondence:  credit for book return from Jayne

 

Student Outreach:  A lively discussion ensued about the problems associated with bullying.  Karen will work with the school staffs to educate staff, students and parents about the problems of bullies, victims and by-standers.  She has the support of Dr. Brady and Dr. Britton and will keep us informed.  Shailyn also suggested making this a Link Crew project.

 

Community Education on Tobacco:  April 8-9, 2008 will be the Building Tobacco Free Communities Conference in Waterbury.  See Joan if you or someone from your agency is interested in attending.

Kendra mentioned that the ALA Breath Express will be visiting the Bethany Middle School 2 dates in November and 2 dates in April.

 

Publicity:  the SCCRAC calendar welcomes any prevention activities to be listed. 

 

Underage Drinking Task Force:  Joan & Gary met with the AV teacher at Amity.  The program will need to be tabled until next year when he can incorporate it into the curriculum.

 

Chairman:  no report

DARE/SRO:  not in attendance.  Don Scott has been promoted to Sergeant.

School Nurse:  Kendra would like to see CPR and AED training brought into the schools.  She will discuss with the Health & Safety Committee.  ODAAC fully supports this effort.

Amy is set for Red Ribbon week in Orange.  She continues to push for a proper health curriculum, and will look to ODAAC for resources such as Joan, funding, and props.

PTA:  Joan has offered to do a 3-part series for the Amity PTA on Alcohol & The Teenage Brain, Legal Consequences of Hosting a Party; Alcohol Advertising:  Mixed Messages.

The question of an After-Prom came up again.  This would be a PTA and school sponsored event.

Youth Services:  Jayne reported that her evening programs continue to attract upwards of 200 kids.  She is working on Holiday Baskets for low income residents.  Also, her Job bank is very active.

Shailyn reported that The Laramie Project will be presented as a drama (play) to each of the 4 grades at Amity, followed by class discussions.  Classes have begun preparing for this by having discussions in Advisory about tolerance, hate-crimes, etc.

 

Coordinators Report:  Joan announced 3 Audio Conferences this Fall sponsored by the OJJDP:  Oct 18:  Reducing Alcohol-related Incidents During the Holiday Season; Nov 15 – Social Host; Dec 18 – Parental Involvement in Preventing Underage Drinking.  Log onto www.udetc.org to participate.
