Orange Drug/Alcohol Action Committee

Noreen called the meeting to order at 7:37 pm

Jayne motioned to accept the minutes from June; Kendra seconded.

 

Anyone interested in serving as Recording Secretary, please notify Joan.

 

Correspondence:  Joan read an inquiry from Girl Scout, Katie Catalano, asking if there were any on-going projects she could assist with as part of her “Gold Award.” 

 

FOCUS REPORTS

 

Student Outreach:  Noreen reported that she has set up many groups at school to identify and support children with specific needs such as Transition, New Student, etc.  Additionally the middle schools are actively involved in anti-bullying programs with readings, group discussions etc.  Joan and Gary were recently approached by Karen Arnold to start a Support Group at the High School.  Joan will invite Karen to next month’s meeting.  Joni also offered some perspective from Laurelton which has an on-going anti-bullying program. 

 

Community Education on Tobacco:  Joan asked the group to make note of the Building Tobacco Free Communities Conference schedule for April 2008.  More details to follow in the future.

 

Publicity:  Be sure to check out the ODAAC website and email Joan with any ideas for content.

 

Underage Drinking Task Force:  A lively discussion ensued which ended with the idea of a series of Teen Issues to air on OGAT and WGAT, hosted and produced by students about issues that directly relate to them.  Joan, Gary and Joni volunteered to meet on Friday, Sept 21 at Gary’s office with school personnel to advance this idea as a project for ODAAC.

 

AREA REPORTS

 

DARE/SRO.  Kendra noted that DARE Officer, Don Scott, has been promoted to Sergeant.  Will await word on committee replacement.

 

Youth Services.   Jayne reported that the upcoming Family Day is scheduled for the fall.

 

SCCRAC.  Joan reminds everyone to submit activities to the RAC website for inclusion on their master calendar.

 

COORDINATORS REPORT:

 

Joan developed PowerPoint presentations entitled “Parenting for Drug Prevention” and “Alcohol Free Living for Teens”.  She also developed a 3-part series on 1)  Alcohol and the Teenage Brain; 2)  Alcohol Marketing toward Youth; and 3)  Connecticut State Law and Hosting Underage Drinking parties.

She has been contacted by Ezra Academy in Woodbridge to make presentations to their students and parent groups this fall.  Any interested group is encouraged to contact ODAAC office.

 

The DMHAS final report has been filed for 06-07.

 

OLD BUSINESS

 

Joan is happy to report that the high school has re-instated the SRO.  Woodbridge Police Officer, Rich Rizzuti ( a former Amity student) is the full-time SRO.  Joan thanks everyone for their support of this important endeavor.
