Summer Cookout

Our Summer Cookout will be held on Monday, July 20 (rain-date: July 21) from 5 to 8 pm under the High Plains Pavilion.  Hot dogs, hamburgers, and chicken will be grilled and served by Frankies Restaurant.  Wine, beer and soda will be available.  Entertainment follows by the Frank Porto Band.  Wear your dancing shoes. Tickets are $10 pp.  Don’t hesitate.  This is always a sold-out event!

Interested in Playing Pinochle or Canasta

Call the center if you are interested in becoming a part of Pinochle or a Canasta group on Tuesdays from 1 to 3. We have several members who have expressed an interest in finding partners for either of these card games.  If enough people call we will set aside some tables in the senior lounge for these games.

Nature Walks

On July 13, walkers will return to Bethany to hike along the shores of Lake Chamberlain.  Walkers will also explore a loop trail south of the reservoir if there is time and interest.  The trail around the reservoir is mostly level.

On July 27, we will return to New Haven to visit some points of interest including Hillhouse Avenue where we hope to find street parking.  An English author in the 1800’s referred to this street as the most beautiful in America.  Most of the homes are now owned by Yale and include the residence of Yale’s President.  We will also explore part of the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail, a one and a quarter mile asphalt paved urban path running through this area. The Grove Street Cemetery, established in 1796 and the burial place of many prominent historical people is also near by.

Combined Ladies Lunch and Learn & Men’s Club

On Thursday, July 16 we will combine Ladies Lunch and Learn with the Men’s Club for a very interesting presentation and slide show by John Caldwell and Baxter Walsh from 10:30 to 11:30 in the senior lounge about their efforts in Biloxi, Mississippi.  John and Baxter have volunteered over the past few years along with 50 other local people to help out after the ravages of Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Katrina has been in the news so much in the past four years that most of us have become somewhat hardened to the plight of the residents of the Gulf, whose homes were damaged or destroyed by the storm.  Some people, however, are still very much engaged with the rebuilding of those homes.  John and Baxter continue to go to Biloxi, Mississippi and perform volunteer work to reconstruct damaged and destroyed houses.  They will describe the experience and explain just how a volunteer spends a week there. Interesting subject, good fellowship and snacks!  All are invited.  Call to let us know you will attend.

Come use our new Billiards Room

We don’t know how many of our members know that we have two very nice pool tables in our newly designated Billiards Room.  The are a couple of groups that come to shoot pool on Monday afternoons and Tuesday and Friday mornings.   We invite other members to come to make use of the pool tables on the other days, or drop in and see if you can join these existing groups.  The men are always looking for more players. Women are welcome too!

Memories from the Past

Someone asked the other day, 'What was your favorite fast food when you were growing up?'  'We didn't have fast food when I was growing up,' I informed him.  All the food was slow.'  'C'mon, seriously. Where did you eat?'  'It was a place called 'at home,'' I explained. 'Mom cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and if I didn't like what she put on my plate I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.'

Some parents owned their own house, never wore Levis, set foot on a golf course, traveled out of the country or had a credit card.  In their later years they had something called a revolving charge card. The card was good only at Sears Roebuck. Or maybe it was Sears & Roebuck.  Either way, there is no Roebuck anymore. Maybe he died.

My parents never drove me to soccer practice. This was mostly because we never heard of soccer.  We didn't have a television in our house until I was 19.  It was, of course, black and white, and the station went off the air at midnight, after playing the national anthem and a poem about God; it came back on the air at about 6 a.m.

I was 21 before I tasted my first pizza; it was called 'pizza pie.' When I bit into it, I burned the roof of my mouth and the cheese slid off, swung down, plastered itself against my chin and burned that, too. It's still the best pizza I ever had.

I never had a telephone in my room.  The only phone in the house was in the living room and it was on a party line. Before you could dial, you had to listen and make sure some people you didn't know weren't already using the line.

Pizzas were not delivered to our home. But milk was.  All newspapers were delivered by boys and all boys delivered newspapers --my brother delivered a newspaper, six days a week. It cost 7 cents a paper, of which he got to keep 2 cents. He had to get up at 6AM every morning.  On Saturday, he had to collect the 42 cents from his customers. His favorite customers were the ones who gave him 50 cents and told him to keep the change. His least favorite customers were the ones who seemed to never be home on collection day.
