Stepping Up to the Plate: The Story of Yankee Great, Lou Gehrig:

Carol Birch, one of Connecticut’s premier storytellers, will be at the Case Memorial Library on Monday, June 22 at 7:30 pm to entertain us with the story of Lou Gehrig.  July 4, 2009 marks the 70th anniversary of Gehrig’s speech in Yankee Stadium- a speech which reverberates in the American psyche to this day.  Standing in Yankee Stadium, where winning was and is everything, Gehrig offered us all a more complex understanding of what it is to lose, and what it is to win when he said: “Today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth…”  In a little less than an hour, Carol Birch traces Gehrig’s life from his youth through his baseball career to his marriage and his final battle with ALS.  Birch says what drew her to his story was the depth of his character as he rose from immigrant son to baseball hero and American icon.  “Gehrig embodies the finest of character traits, for at the height of his power, he remained unpretentious, trustworthy, honest, hardworking, and loyal,” says Birch.   Gehrig’s story is filled with humor and heart, grit and glory and resonates for diehard baseball fans as well as those who know nothing about baseball.  This free event is co-sponsored by the library and the senior center.  Call the senior center to reserve a seat.

The Road Taken….The Merritt Parkway - Combined Ladies Lunch and Learn and Men’s Club:

Lisa Seidenberg, producer of a documentary film about the Merritt Parkway, will show the film on June 11 for a combined Men’s Club and Ladies Lunch and Learn from 10:30 to 11:30 in the senior lounge. The year was 1931.  It was a time in America of economic hardship and millions unemployed. In Connecticut, they decided to build a beautiful road. The Queen of Parkways, the Merritt Parkway celebrates its 70th Anniversary this year. Mixing historical information, lively personal anecdotes and lots of rarely seen archival material, “The Road Taken…The Merritt Parkway”, takes an alternately poetic and informative look at the Merritt Parkway; the unique art-deco bridges, the landscaping, those infuriating twists and turns that give the road its character.  The Merritt is part of Connecticut’s historic memory - a 37 mile stretch of road architecture - arguably the only road in the world that is truly a work of art. As a depression era public works project, it is also a timely story with parallels to today.

Included in the large cast of characters is photographer Nate Gibbons, former DOT Commissioner Emil Frankel, Chris Wigren, Deputy Director, CT Trust for Historic Preservation, preservationist/artist Renee Kahn, as well as Henry Merritt, a relative of Schuyler Merritt , the Stamford Congressman for whom the Parkway is named.

The Lakeside Diner in Stamford also makes an appearance.  The project was supported by the Connecticut Commission for Culture and Tourism and the Merritt Parkway Conservancy.  Reservations are needed for this event.

Neighborhood Music School Presents Vintage Voices:

Last fall, NMS was one of just nine schools across the country to become part of a Creative Aging Initiative sponsored by the MetLife Foundation.  Funds were provided to develop and implement participatory programs for adults ages 60+.  Forty adults from throughout the New Haven area joined the inaugural class of “Vintage Voices”, a 12-week program which engaged singers of all skill levels in a diverse array of musical styles and introduced low-intensity modern dance that can be enjoyed by older adults of all physical capabilities and comfort levels.  Come to the senior center on Thursday, June 18 from 10:30 to 11:30 for a demonstration of this creative program of the Neighborhood Music School.  There will be audience participation.  The program will take place in the gym.  Reservations are suggested.

Nature Walks:

On June 8, walkers will return to do some of the trials in the Pequannock Valley Park in Trumbull which were visited three years ago.  This is a scenic area along the river and the group will hike both sides of the river.  The west has an old railroad right of way high above the river.

On June 22 the group will travel to New Haven to explore East Rock Park.  This will include different areas and trails including the Pardee Rose Garden and Greenhouse.  If time, we will drive to the summit for the great view of the city and surrounding area.  The walking is mostly level. Please call the center to sign up for either or both walks.

Health Chat for June:  Managing Medications:

Cabaret Night:

Actor Richard Clark will be returning to the Orange Senior Center on Wednesday, June 10 at 5:30 for Cabaret Night in the senior café. He will be performing Barrymore! By William Luce.  Enjoy the life and times of this early 20th century “bad boy” actor.  Have a rollicking good time as he takes us down memory lane to the era of the roaring 20’s and the 30’s.  Join an audience at a rehearsal of his greatest performance as Shakespeare’s Richard III.  His trusty prompter tries to keep him on the straight-and-narrow and pick up the pieces as she stumbles through this boozy undertaking.  This presentation is a charming concoction of comedy and pathos as Barrymore struts what’s left of his “stuff”.  Family history, theater lore, and the rigors of marriage and Hollywood are mixed in a portrait of a great artist who has lost his way.  Tickets for Cabaret Night are $5 per person and can be purchased in the community Services office.  Coffee and dessert will be served.

Friday Afternoon at the Movies – Marley & Me:

Come join us on Friday, June 19 at 2 pm for another Friday afternoon at the movies.  We will show “Marley & Me”, a wonderful film about a dog and his family that is sure to tug at your heartstrings.  You will be able to identify with this true to life story if you have ever loved a pet.  The movie stars Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston.  We will provide popcorn and soda.  Call to register.

The photo can be of you and your spouse, a group of friends or members of a family.   Ina will make a copy of the photo you bring in and give the original back to you.  She will then take a “Today” photo of all the persons in the original photo.  All persons in the original photo have to be present for the “today” photo. You will then be able to have the “old” photo and the “new” photo to place side by side as a memoir.  Appointments can be made by calling the center after June 1.
